Material : MIM SS-316L
Part Weight : 4.2 gm
The manufacturer requires multiple processes to produce and assemble the part. In the first step, the manufacturer machining the circular rod, then stamping the flange, and finally joining the flange to the rod by laser welding. Manufacturer had faced difficulties with multi operations. Therefore, the manufacturer had to undergo machining to meet its critical tolerances, but burrs created during machining affects the functionality of the part and machining could not meet the dimensional requirements of the customer.
A MIM tool with three slides and two inserts was designed by MDM. Additionally, MDM prevented all secondary post-MIM procedures on the part, such as burr-free grooves, slots, and holes. MDM manufactured the required part with MIM SS-316 which is a highly corrosion resistant material. Additionally, the part underwent additional electropolishing to enhance its corrosion resistance and surface look. It has resulted in a satisfied customer who has seen a 40% cost reduction in the overall cost of the project.
MDM innovative solution resulted in a reduction in the overall weight of the part, and the MIM tool accommodated all the critical features, including threads produced by the MIM tool using thread inserts.
